Born in Veroli, Gerardo Iacoucci is a mysterious figure in the history of Italian music. A notable jazz pianist and the founder of the Scuola Popolare di Musica di Testaccio in Rome, he is arguably most widely know for his contributions to the strange world of Library Music, producing some of its most memorable and distinct artifacts, among the most sought after of which is his 1972 LP Industria N.1. The album is a topical wonder - a product of the revolutionary spirit which marked he end of the 1960’s and the early 70’s and the grim rise of its right-wing counterpart during the same era.Built around the concept of the factory, placing its political idealism against its role as alienating workplace, the album doubles as an imaginary soundtrack for daily toil - a Musique concrète wonder built from the sounds of machines, tools, and ambience, which can be seen as a prototype for the Industrial music which would rise a decade later. Almost entirely constructed from field recordings made factories and workshops, it is a startling alternate reality- a shimmering world, as beautiful as it is haunting. A wonderful, pioneering artifact from a lost history of experimental music, combining politics, art, avant-garde practice. Entirely essential for any fan of Library Music, experimental music, left wing thought, and the avant-garde. A stunning entry in Intervallo’s already incredible catalog. Grab it fast. This one won't sit around long
