AMON DÜÜL IISURROUNDED BY THE BARS(Spalax 14810) CD 57mA couple of months ago Phil Burford (who'd been in Germany witnessing the attempted re-launch of Amon Düül II) sent me a tape of their recent session, including two different versions of Surrounded by the Stars. It was certainly curious to hear new recordings by Amon Düül II, although musically it sounded more like Renate Knaup being accompanied by a computer than a real band. Yes, dig that metronomic thud thud rhythm. What next? Amon Düül II the house band? Actually, as Phil said to me, Renate was in exceptionally fine voice on these recordings, but the music itself was turgidly dull. So, little did I expect these recordings to be released, especially not so as part of a compilation!Anyway, here are two tracks from that session together with 1993 polished-up remixes of tracks from the classic era of Düül. I would gather that the idea is to lure people used to modern production styles into Amon Düül II's music. There's only one version of the new versions of Surrounded by the Stars here (despite what the cover says), the other is the original. The other new recording is a brand new composition entitled Dancing on Fire, which comes over as an outrageous over-the-top pop song that's nothing like anything else I've heard from Amon Düül II, fun but not really that good! So, what more can I say? The ghost of Amon Düül II refuses to die. But, will they ever again do anything good?Alan Freemanmy review from Audion #26, page 25 (Autumn 1993)p.s. as "Bloop" here correctly points out, the rest of this CD is made-up from the "Rock in Deutschland Vol.1" compilation (which was slightly trendied-up remixes, although at least 2 track durations here disagree with that, and not all 1993 new mixes as stated on the cover).
