Discussion about The Carstairs - It Really Hurts Me Girl

This is, according to Tom Moulton himself, the first remix he ever did. It was shelved for years before its release in the UK. This track (in original form) was championed by Ian Levine when he was the DJ at the famed Mecca in Blackpool in the mid-70s. The Mecca was one of the major Northern Soul clubs in the UK during the movements' golden age, and Levine effectively divided the scene overnight with this track. English music fanatics being what they are/were, it caused huge controversy as Levine had expanded a bit beyond the strict 60s Northern soul formula (fast traditional "stompers" for dancing) and allowed some slightly funkier 70s tunes into his mix. The result was the start of what is now known as "modern soul"-- the original version of this track was the catalyst. Transitioning between Northern soul, early disco, and modern soul, "It Really Hurts Me Girl" has enormous historic value spanning several genres/scenes of music. All that said, don't forget that the song itself is, as they'd say in England, a "crackin' tune!"
