Discussion about Krautzone - Spiritual Retreat
Ienekan
There was something strangely familiar about this album right from the first play. I soon realised what it was. A few years back I had a Facebook message from Komet Lulu about a Christmas gift for her friends and Krautrock fans (at least that's what I recall) drawing attention to a downloadable unreleased Krautzone jam session called "Psychotic" on her Soundcloud page. I promptly downloaded it and burnt it to CD and must have listened to it 6 or so times since. Anyway "Spiritual Retreat" turns out to be that exact same session, if a totally different mixdown, i.e. the intro wasn't there on the Soundcloud version, and there are at least 3 edits in the LP (hard to work out exactly where they are), and it's split over two LP sides. Sula's new mix has a far wider stereo spectrum, with all the instruments more clearly defined, except the synths which are lower in the mix. This gives me the impression that the download was an on-the-fly transfer with no mix, whereas great care has gone into the actual album version. Of course, I'm still awaiting Krautzone on CD!
